GBAC Basketball Tournament
Berkeley’s first basketball season finished last week with a string of victories against local opposition. The highlight of the basketball season for many at the school was the performance of our students in the last big GBAC tournament of the season.
The tournament was well hosted by Anglo Singapore and featured Berkeley, New Sathorn & Garden international schools. There were medals and trophies for girls and boys in the U13’s and U15’s categories.
All the teams arrived well prepared and ready for action. The girl’s tournament was from 8 am to 12 pm and the boys played from 1 pm to 5pm. There was an enthusiastic crowd in attendance the whole day and we were very pleased so many of our parents and friends showed up to cheer on our teams.
In the U13’s girls Berkeley knocked up a quick win against Anglo Singapore and drew with New Sathorn to take the trophy. We must give a special mention to Jasmine who scored 14 out of 18 points in a flawless display of talent. Air, Flora, Rebecca, Opal, Jannie and Mimi also played there part in some good wins. Coach Ms. Ashley was ecstatic, “we worked so hard in the build up for day and it has all come off to plan, my girls are great!”
In the U15’s girls Berkeley defeated New Sathorn convincingly and then had a final game against Anglo Singapore. The home team went into the game easy favorites but they were in for a surprise. Great defensive work from Jenny, Sirmone, Minnie and Champagne kept the Anglos sharp shooters at bay and Berkeley were lethal on the break with Sammy and Puffy. Play maker Nina was flawless under the basket hitting 5 for 5 with the lay ups. It wasn’t even 11:30 and we had already won our first two trophies. U15’s coach Darrick was almost in tears as his girls lifted the cup.
He said, ‘in all my playing years never have I seen so much determination and grit from a team that has played and practiced on some of the hottest courts in Bangkok. We were fantastic. Finally our short game came together and we got the groove going. There will be smiles for the rest of the week as the magnitude of this great wins slowly sinks in.’
After lunch saw the beginning of the boy’s tournament, hosts Anglo Singapore were looking good in warm ups and were ready to win on home turf. The Berkeley U15’s boys started with a splutter against a free shooting Garden team. Garden hit two 3 point shots in the early minutes, Coach Mike became slightly concerned with our defense and called a string of time outs to settle the team and get the boys focused. Berkeley prevailed in the end winning by a comfortable margin.
New Sathorn were next up and they had put on some good displays of basketball losing narrowly to Anglo Singapore. Berkeley player Donggeon was great on picking up the rebounds and Kong was hitting most of his shots from the middle, setting up some good flanking maneuvers with Babe. New Sathorn ran out of steam and fell behind early in the 3rd quarter never to get back in the game.
The U15’s final was Berkeley v Anglo. Having never beaten Anglo in competitive matches the boys in red were feeling pretty confident. The game started with a frenetic pace, both teams went close early on but couldn’t hit the shots. Berkeley were once again solid in defense with Donggeon, Daniel and Kong. Babe, Tychoon and Gabrielle were also threatening up front. Eventually after almost 5 minutes of playing time Tychoon picked up a foul and nailed the free throws to take us up by 2. Anglo spurred on by the realization that this wasn’t going to be as easy as they thought hit back and took the lead. Andy came in and was playing his best game ever. Kong hit another long range effort and the Berkeley lead increased. Anglo had 10 shots that jumped back out of the basket. The crowd was screaming loud as the game entered the 4th quarter. There was never time to relax. Gabrielle saved his best for last on the day and scored the quick 4 points that took us 5 ahead with a minute to play. Could this just be our day?
With a minute to go and Anglo on the attack they were foiled again by some great work in the Berkeley defense. The shot went off and missed the mark. It was Berkeley by a couple and the cheers went up. Coach Mike was a ball of sweat, and was seen congratulating his players on a job well done. Asked after the game how he felt he replied, “ I am so proud of our boys to have come this far and to have played so well together. Anglo are worthy opponents and to beat them at their school shows our commitment and efforts to be the best. They were unlucky not have scored some of those shots in the 3rd, but we held on and did it in the end.”
Berkeley’s U13’s boys came away with some good experience and playing time.
Berkeley went home with 3 of the 4 trophies on the day, and has some real silverware to put in the trophy cabinet. We are very pleased with all of our players before, during and after the event. We showed great sportsmanship, confidence and team work. This was Berkeley’s first competitive basketball season and we have completed it very triumphantly. Well done all! We are Berkeley.
