***Berkeley Roll Over TCIS***
The Berkeley girl's varsity soccer team had a real spring in their steps as they enjoyed an opening pre season home win against local rivals Thai Chinese International School -TCIS.
Berkeley rolled to victory 6-1, in an engaging and well put together attacking game with some marvelous team and individual performances.
Missing a couple of key players from the start Berkeley still managed to turn on the style with some class play from the newly emerging midfield attacking duo of Barbour and Wilson.
After plenty of early Berkeley pressure in the first 10 minutes of the game, Berkeley captain Nina Wilson finally broke the deadlock after 17 minutes with a great solo run from the midfield, slotting the ball home in the bottom right hand corner leaving the TCIS keeper no chance. Good defensive attacking play from Berkeley's Mayda Gillespie kept the opposition in their own half and encouraged Berkeley to keep moving forward.
Jasmine Barbour Berkeley's key striker on the day was instrumental in harrying TCIS defense the whole first half. Her pick and run moves along with some accurate passing kept TCIS on the back foot and she came close to scoring on three occasions but never managed hit the back of the net. This was soon to change!
1-0 at the half.
The second half started with a flyer as Berkeley ran forward from the whistle in an attacking 1 - 2 maneuver with Nastia Sokolov laying off a nice inside pass at the near post for Jasmine Barbour to touch in and make the score 2-0 to Berkeley. TCIS weren't going to lay down and came charging back. After gaining a run of possession they had a good shot at goal well saved by Berkeley keeper Marlena Wilson and this brought on their first corner of the match The corner was nicely taken and well weighted, flying straight into the middle of the box, a poor clearance from the Berkeley back line gave TCIS the opportunity they needed, and their center forward didn't waste anytime, hitting home a lovely curling shot from 7 meters out.
2-1. Game on.
This was a real wake up call for the Berkeley team and they didn't disappoint. Mayda Gillespie set up Jasmine Barbour for her second with a nice break away run and cross field pass. Jasmine Barbour from 10 meters out picked up the pass, turned, and with a deft little one two touch fooling the defense thundered home off her favored left foot. The cheers went up from the sidelines. Brilliant goal.
Berkeley's fitness now came into play and Nina Wilson made it 4-1 on the half hour mark following a nice pass from Jasmine Barbour.
Andrea Orrsich was playing well in the back line and passed off to Nina Wilson to help start the run that scored Berkeley's 5th. Nina Wilson took the ball down the left wing, drew the keeper off her line and played a lovely little inside ball to a perfectly placed Jasmine Barbour to make it 5-1 and give Jasmine her hat-trick.
Debutante Taylore Hilou came on late in the game and once again stirred up the TCIS defense scoring Berkeley's 6th and her first after some good running and passing with Wilson and Barbour.
It was a great home field opener for the up coming soccer season beginning in November. All of the Berkeley community would like to thank TCIS for making the trip over and for playing such a competitive and fair game. Many thanks to all the Berkeley community for coming out to support our girls. With two of Berkeley's top players Flora Roy and Rebekka Brandstatter unable to play due to musical commitments the team is shaping up to be lethal in the next GBAC season.
Sports. We are Berkeley!
