International Schools Mathematics Competition

4 December, 2013

Berkeley took part recently in a major mathematics competition hosted by Trinity International School. Eight schools competed, ASB, Anglo Singapore, Pan-Asia, Wells, Keerapat and Trinity, and Berkeley gave an excellent showing against them. The event was well organized, with an icebreaker starting off the event with a mixed team building exercise involving all schools sitting down together talking, brainstorming, and finally designing a perfect house or building. Students were expected to support all their layouts with credible mathematical functions and formulae. This lasted two hours and a light snack was served in between to keep the brain motors rolling for the big school versus school competition after lunch.

The groups all did their presentations, and some new found friends were made.  Thereafter, the schools split into their own groups ready for the highlight of the day; the knock-out math competition. Let’s see who the best of the day was.

All schools fielded two teams of 3 students; an under 15 team and an under 12 team. To avoid any technical issues, the competition was conducted, with pencils, paper, and brain power. The children loved it! Mathematics teachers from each school acted as judges throughout the competition, and did a wonderful job.

Our competing students were:

Grade 6

  • Ped

  • Mimi

  • Flora

Grade 9

  • Kong

  • Grich

  • Tarn

Competition was fierce, and Berkeley thrived under pressure. Our students showed their mettle, cleverness in mind and high IQ’s finishing a proud 2nd in the under 15’s and a proud 3rd in the under 12’s. Berkeley was the only school who placed in the top three in both groups. This is a key indicator to show the broadness and fluidity of our math program and the ability of our master math teacher Mr. Brian Burkey to impart knowledge onto our students for their continued success. We would like to thank all the students and teachers from every school that took part, with a special thanks to Trinity for organizing the event. It’s all about the numbers! We are Berkeley!
