Berkeley Boys vs the Swiss U14

5 May, 2014

Berkeley Boys U14

There was a strong feeling of self belief in the Berkeley boys camp after a series of long practice sessions, working on all aspects of their game, that a win was on the cards.

The first quarter started slow with much of the action centered around the midfield. Plenty of throw ins and short passes kept each team guessing who would break for goal.

As in the other earlier matches on the day it was Berkeley who made the first big attacking plays. Gabriel took on a holding role in the front center picking up balls from Kong and Joey. He used the ball well and kept Babe in business with perfectly weighted passes splitting the Swiss back line on a number of occasions.

Babe took to the role well and after shooting wide of the post and over the bar,it was third time lucky as he opened the scoring 1-0 to Berkeley with some nice passing combinations along the front.

Minutes later the second went in using the same format. Kong recovered the ball at the back, he passed down the wing to Joey, who crossed into Gabriel. Babe was waiting slightly off the center of goal. Gabriel passed out and Babe hammered in the second. The Swiss were rocked and lacking any tactics to stop the Berkeley surges.

Spencer and Didi, were playing well at the back along with Siam.  Noah came on to keep the Berkeley speed in the attack and midfield.

Babe scored his hat-trick with another long range cracker shortly before the break  3-0 at the half.

The Swiss had been quiet the first half but that was all about to change. A few tactical substitutions put a new spring in their step and they were firmly entrenched in the

Berkeley half for much of the third quarter. Goalie Andy made a series of superb saves, frustrating the talented Swiss strikers.

Berkeley defender Tata brought in some new life to the end of the 3rd quarter helping to soak up the pressure, but something had to give and the Swiss opened their account with a fine shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to make it 3-1.

Berkeley must have thought the game was over before the whistle went as seemingly seconds later the Swiss had their best goal of the day with a tremendous 15m left footed volley fired from the edge of the box. 3-2. The home crowd were starting to rally behind their boys and victory or even a draw was now in their grasp.

Michael Strunk the Berkeley coach was seen to be frantically reorganising his tactics and players trying to regain the initiative and stop the rot. Gabriel and Babe were reinstalled as the main strike partnership and this paved the way for Berkeley to pull one back and make it 4-2. Babe got number 4.

Good work between all the Berkeley players saw Babe net his 5th and 6th goals.

Final score 6-2.

A very well played game from both sides with lots of action, goals, and excitement. A big congratulations must go out to Babe for scoring all 6 goals for our team, and all the other players for playing their part in this great win.
