Berkeley Girls U14

The Berkeley girls have never been beaten at this age group and came into this competition with 4 straight wins under their belts.

Expectations were high and another victory was in the offing.

The match was a quick fire game the first quarter with Berkeley getting close 3 times. The strike partnership of Jazzy & Rebekka was fast and they constantly got in behind the slower and much larger Swiss defenders. The Swiss goalie was in top form the whole game, twice stealing the ball from the strikers feet at the edge of the box.

The Swiss had an excellent playmaker in midfield and she delivered many balls out of defense to keep her team in the game.

Pear, Mayda and Tarn were well tested but kept the ball on the right side of the field.

Nina led the Berkeley defense from the back and was a constant threat to the Swiss with her fetch and carry tactics; strong in the tackle and off loading the ball forward to the strikers.

Flora was also solid in the midfield with some good touches, runs and passes.

Neither team could break the deadlock and the score was a competitive 0-0 at the half.

Earn and Puffy played well in the back line making a string of good clearance throughout the 3rd quarter. Pim spent some time on the wing but was unable to make decent headway against the heavier weighted and more physical Swiss midfielders.

Midway through the 3rd saw the best chances of the game.

Berkeley’s Jazzy had a shot saved off the post after a good run and offload from Nina.

Seconds later after a poor clearance from the Swiss, Berkeley’s top goal scorer Rebekka had her angled shot parried away by the keeper only to run across an open goal mouth with no one in support.

The crowd were enthusiastic and well behind both teams; the atmosphere electric.

The Swiss playmaker Victoria never gave up and slipped the Berkeley defense after a long clearance from goal. She finished the move with a screaming shot that flashed off a post and rolled to touch.

The Swiss came forward again and were thwarted twice by Berkeley’s keeper Marlena who made a dashing save off the line and then again at the edge of the box..

The deadlock had to break and it was Berkeley who struck first. Center forward Rebekka poached one in from the edge of the 6 yard box after some good build up play between Flora and Nina. 1-0 minutes to go.

The Swiss team sensing defeat rose to the occasion and went in with all girls forward. The pressure paid off and after another good save from Marlena they won a corner.

The corner was a high floated ball drifting to the back of the goal, the defense missed the clearance and the Swiss tapped in for an equaliser. A great cheer rose up from the home crowd.

With minutes to go the ball was centered around the midfield with both teams setting up to play out the whistle.

A fine 1-1 draw was the final result. Well done to both teams for effort, skills and fairplay.
