Rasmussen University

Greetings! I’m Kemchan and I’m very excited to be here at Berkeley! Last year I started out as a substitute teacher and got to know almost all the kids here. When I wasn’t in the classroom I was volunteering my time as an assistant to Mr. Naun and Coach Mike. Now, I get to be a full P.E. teacher! Before coming to Berkeley I was a Physical Trainer for 23 years. I’ve helped people of all ages reach their physical goals, whether it was weight loss, therapy, or training for an event.  I’m originally from New York, moved to Seattle for a while and now I’m here! I’ll be teaching the younger kids how to use their bodies to move, be coordinated and balanced, and have fun doing it!

Hello Berkeley Lions! My name is Christine and I am so excited to be at Berkeley. I have always been in love with performing arts from a young age, taking part in any musical I could! I have performed in some  great shows, such as: Annie, Sound of Music and West Side Story. While living in Dubai, I was lucky enough to share the stage with actors from the West End in the production's of Hairspray and High School Musical 1&2. I hope to instill the same love for Drama into my students by creating a fun, creative and collaborative classroom. Let's get our jazz hands ready!

Ron Van Zelst

Information Technology

B.A. Music Production - Wolverhampton University, UK

Hi! I’m Ron, and I have been part of the Berkeley family for many years now since my wife Amy started as Mandarin teacher in 2013. I’ve been actively involved in many projects at Berkeley and started working full-time as a theater tech and music department support technician in Berkeley 2018.

I come from a creative technology background which has always been my passion. I started really getting into computers when I found out how I could use them for creative purposes and it resulted in working as a music producer for various record companies for many years. In the Netherlands I used to handle the IT and video side at a foundation for local history education throughout the country.

In 2019 I  also started teaching coding at Berkeley’s elementary school and am excited  to now get the opportunity to further share my knowledge with the creative kids at Berkeley in my upcoming IT/Design and Berkeley TV classes.

I was born in Washington D.C and was raised just outside the city in Virginia.  From a young age I knew that my passion would always be in sport. I grew up as a swimmer and played basketball, soccer, baseball, lacrosse and American football. I came to Berkeley to build a competitive sport program and spread my love of physical activity to the Berkeley community. Bangkok has been my home for over 10 years and I really like the endless summers and quality of life here in Thailand.  My hobbies are spending time with my beautiful wife and kids, hiking, riding motorcycles and playing cricket.  I enjoy every minute I spend on this campus and look forward to seeing all the smiling faces when I walk through the school gates.  My job is the best in the world and I am very proud to be a member of the Berkeley family, We Are Berkeley!

Master of Arts in Teaching  University of South Carolina

I enjoy working with our students, teachers, and staff here at Berkeley. I think that our Berkeley family is a great group with a positive attitude. I enjoy reading to elementary classes and helping students to find the just right book.  I like to see enthusiastic students like ours. Our Middle School and High School students also enjoy using our library resources. They have dedicated teachers who help them to focus on reading.

My wife and I both like living here in Thailand. We are fascinated by the Thai culture and enjoy the kind hearts of the Thai people. The Thai language is very difficult and I’ve been studying it since I arrived in Thailand. I am always appreciative of the Thais who try to help me with the language. Whether I’m in the market buying fruit or taking a motorcycle taxi at the head of my soi, I have noticed that Thais are always patient and take the time to listen to me and to try to understand me.

Ellis van Maarseveen

Secondary Theater Director

M.A. Theatre Studies - University New England, Australia

B. A. Theatre Performance - Maastricht Theatre Academy, the Netherlands

Hello - I’m Ellis, and my surname is pronounced Van Maa(like the last -a in IKEA)rsuhvain. That’s why I ask my students to call me Ms. Ellis. I’m Berkeley’s secondary school drama teacher, and I’ve been teaching since 2000. I grew up in the Netherlands, and have spent many years living in London UK, and in Japan. I’m a trained actress, so while teaching I’ve always kept my connection to the performance industry by acting for theatre, TV and film, directing theatre, doing voice overs in the UK, The Netherlands and Japan, and by writing plays. I also worked in TV documentary production in the UK, I’m an ISTA artist through which I taught many students in many parts of the world, and I was a Theatre Arts teacher at several international IB schools.

My aim in education is to get students to find (and gain confidence about) their creativity - wherever that comes from, and wherever a student wants to take that into their future as doctors, economists, politicians or designers - to name just a few options. I should mention athletes and teachers as well, I gather. Drama is a lot more than performing a part, and that inspiration I want to pass on to the Berkeley students; after all, Shakespeare is not the only colour.
